There are some places that instantly make you slow down the moment you arrive. Rovinj is one of them.

It’s effortlessly charming in that European way where no one is trying too hard but everything is still somehow perfect. You can wander for hours without a plan, popping into little shops, grabbing a spritz, and living your best costal grandma life.

It’s small, stunning, and the exact kind of place that makes you want to romanticize your life immediately.

Our girls’ weekend in Rovinj ended up being the perfect mix of relaxation, incredible food, and those little travel moments that remind you just how special it is to share experiences with friends.

The Dreamiest Villa Stay šŸ’ž

Our Villa in Zuntici
Our Villa in Zuntici

For the weekend, we stayed in a beautiful villa just outside of town with a pool and plenty of space for our group. After a full travel day, arriving somewhere peaceful like that felt like hitting the reset button.

The villa itself was incredible! It was bright, comfortable, and surrounded by greenery but what made the stay even better was our host, Marko. From the moment we arrived he made us feel completely taken care of, sharing recommendations and making sure we had everything we needed for the weekend.

There’s something really special about having a home base like that when you travel with friends. Instead of rushing out the door constantly, you actually get to relax, sit by the pool, drink wine, and enjoy the space together.

The Best First-Night Travel Hack: Bring the Chef to You šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€šŸ³

After a long travel day, the last thing anyone wants to do is get dressed up and hunt down a restaurant reservation.

So instead, we tried something that I’m convinced is the ultimate first-night travel move: we brought a private chef to the villa. Also saying that, I know how it sounds… pRivaTEe CHeFFf … but hear me out… super affordable! For eight girlies, it was around 35 euro a person for three courses.

That evening, a lovely local couple arrived and set everything up for dinner. The entire experience felt relaxed and intimate. There was no rushing, no noise, just good food and great company.

The menu was a perfect introduction to Istrian cuisine:

- A cold appetizer platter with prosciutto, local cheeses, and homemade sausages

- Homemade Istrian pasta (pljukanci) with beef and mushrooms

- And a rich chocolate dessert with forest fruit coulis and ice cream

Everything was absolutely delicious, but honestly what made the night so memorable was how warm and kind the couple was. It felt less like hiring a chef and more like being welcomed into someone’s culinary traditions. Afterwards, she invited us to her restaurant in Pula which we will definitely be taking her up on!

If you’re arriving somewhere after a travel day, I can’t recommend this enough. Stay in, unwind, and let dinner come to you.

Morning Reset: The Saltwater Spa Detour šŸ§–ā€ā™€ļø

Originally we had planned to spend the afternoon poolside at the villa, but travel plans don’t always go exactly as expected (the heated pool wasn’t so heated) and sometimes that leads you somewhere even better.

Instead, we ended up pivoting to a nearby saltwater spa, and it was exactly what we needed. Marko felt bad about the pool so called and did the reservations for us which was really nice!

The spa had two beautiful pools, multiple saunas, and a salt room designed for relaxation and breathing therapy. After a busy week and the excitement of travel, spending a few hours there was the perfect reset.

Floating in the warm saltwater, moving between saunas, and sitting quietly in the salt room slowed everything down in the best way. It was one of those unexpected travel detours that turns out to be a highlight.

Sometimes the best part of a trip is simply giving yourself permission to relax.

Wandering Rovinj 🐠

The rest of the day was dedicated to exploring Rovinj itself.

The town is small enough that you can easily spend the day wandering without a plan which is exactly what we did! We strolled through the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town, popped into little boutiques, grabbed drinks at the Mediterranean Bar (highly recommend), and stopped often just to admire the view of the Adriatic sparkling between buildings.

Rovinj has this effortless charm that’s hard to describe until you’re there. Every corner feels like a postcard. Laundry hangs between colorful buildings and the sea always seems to be just a few steps away.

It’s the kind of place where the best moments happen when you’re not rushing.

The Golden Rule of Dining in Rovinj: Time Your Sunset šŸŒ…

That evening we had dinner reservations at La Puntalina, a restaurant perched right along the water. If you ever find yourself in Rovinj, here’s my biggest tip: book your table about 30 minutes before sunset.

Check the weather app, plan accordingly, and request an outdoor table right by the water.

We arrived just as the sky began to turn golden. Watching the sun slowly dip into the Adriatic while sharing a meal with friends is one of those moments that feels almost surreal.

Sunday Morning at Kozlović Winery šŸ„‚

Before heading back, we squeezed in one final experience that ended up being the perfect way to close out the weekend.

On Sunday morning we packed up, grabbed coffee, and drove about 45 minutes inland to Kozlović Winery, one of the most beautiful wineries in the Istrian region.

The setting alone is worth the visit! Rolling vineyards stretching across the hills, modern architecture overlooking the valley, and a peaceful countryside atmosphere that feels worlds away from the coast.

We booked a tasting that included five wines, which gave us a great introduction to Istria’s wine scene. The region is especially known for Malvasia, a crisp white wine that grows beautifully in this area, and tasting it right where it’s produced made the experience feel even more special.

Sitting on the terrace overlooking the vineyards, sipping wine, and soaking in the quiet countryside was the perfect slow ending to the trip before hitting the road.

If you have time while visiting Rovinj or anywhere in Istria, adding a winery visit is absolutely worth it.

Why Trips Like This Matter & Final

Thoughts šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Traveling with friends is always special, but there’s something uniquely meaningful about trips centered around female friendships. Trips like this remind you that friendship deserves the same intentional time and care that we give to so many other parts of life.

Rovinj might be small, but it’s one of those destinations that leaves a big impression.

Between the charming old town, incredible food, relaxed coastal energy, unforgettable sunsets, and countryside wineries just a short drive away, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and savor every moment.

If you’re planning a trip through Croatia or the Istrian peninsula, don’t skip it.

Bring your friends, book that sunset dinner, visit a winery, and maybe even invite a chef to cook for you on your first night. I’m already dreaming of the next weekend back!
